CSCS Cards - Construction Skills Certification Scheme

What is a CSCS card?

A CSCS card is the gateway to the next stage of your construction career! It is the leading skills certification scheme in the UK construction industry and provides proof to employers that you are fully qualified for the sort of construction work you will be doing on site.

It's a very simple process to apply for any of the CSCS cards:

First, you apply on the CSCS website for the course most relevant to you i.e. CSCS NVQ Level 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 (see below for more detail).

Second, you must ensure that you have taken the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test within the past two years. The level you must take this course at depends on the level of CSCS card you are applying for.

  • For most Blue and Gold card applicants, as well as all Green and Red card applicants, you will be required to take the Operative CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test. If you require this qualification you can book the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course through our sister training company UTN Training.
  • For certain Blue and Gold card applicants, you must take the Specialist level CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test. Please contact us here to find out more.
  • For Black card applicants, you must take the Manager and Professional test.

Lastly, you pay the flat £36 fee, as well as the fee for the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test. CSCS will be in touch to update you on your application's progress.

Understanding the NEW CSCS Cards

Labourer Card - Green CSCS Card:

This is a labourer card designed for a construction labourer has been employed to carry out various manual labour jobs on construction sites. It is the minimum required for our NVQ Level 2 courses. You need this for manual on-site work, and must have passed the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test within the past two years to be able to get it.Once you've passed this test, though, you won't have to take it again for another ten years.

Once you have completed your training and NVQ qualifications you can look to apply for a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card for craft operatives, or Blue CPCS Competent Operator card for plant operators.

Skilled Worker - Blue CSCS Card:

This is the skilled workers card. So if you're a professional, such as plumber, bricklayer, or plasterer, this blue CSCS card is for you - providing you have achieved a construction related NVQ level 2. The Blue CSCS card is valid for five years and can be renewed thereafter.

Once you have acquired a Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card, you can work towards attaining the Gold CSCS Card when you've completed the relevant NVQ. See more here:

Experienced Worker - Red CSCS Card:

It is not a legislative requirement to hold a CSCS card, however, more and more principal contractors are often identifying whether they will only allow CSCS card holders on site. If you have on-the-job experience but no qualifications, this is the card to prove it to support continued employment.

However, the red CSCS card is only valid for one year, and cannot be renewed, as it is intended to be temporary while you take your construction-related NVQ. You will be expected to be working towards an NVQ level 2 or higher.

Supervisory Worker - Gold CSCS Card:

If you have achieved a construction related NVQ level 3 or an approved apprenticeship (e.g. with NJCBI, BATJIC) or completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship, then this Gold CSCS card is for you.

CSCS has recently introduced the Profiled Route which is for highly competent supervisors. Once achieved the Gold CSCS card demonstrates that you have the skills, knowledge, experience and are capable to supervise colleagues on a construction site.

Management - Black CSCS Card:

This card is designed for people who are working at a managerial level and have either achieved a construction related NVQ level 5, 6, or 7 in the relevant area or are holding a pre-existing NVQ level 4 in construction management.

The black CSCS card demonstrates management experience and competency, and shows that you can work safely. All of this adds up to two things: a better worker, and a more employable supervisor.
